What is this mysterious object? Anyone who's been to Rome has seen it virtually everywhere...

I think this is a variation upon a 'street manhole cover'. We have them here (but not as gorgeously ornate) for water, electricity and gas, as well as other services.

I think I know… it's one of those fountains for drinking, but shot from directly above… vero?
