Bellis perennis | homage to Gina
Don't care what the calendar says. It's officially spring. When the wild daisies start to bloom, to me it's spring, period.
The name 'daisy' is a corruption of "day's eye", because the whole crown of petals closes at night and opens in the morning. Here we call this flower "margheritina," a diminutive of Margherita. In both languages this is a beautiful girl's name.

Hah! Doesn't that just figure? Spring in Rome and freezing temperatures with the threat of snow in Seattle. A complete roll reversal!
ReplyDeleteWith all the snow still falling in many areas, these flowers are a welcome harbinger of Spring.
ReplyDeleteYeah well I SPOKE TOO SOON! Freezing rain and unpredicatble winds are slapping the smiles off our faces. Bring back the fleece, slip the Uggs back on...
ReplyDeleteSi, Eleonora, you are breaking my heart with talk of primavera! I still have 1/3 meter of snow in my yard! We did have a nice weekend, but no daisies! Warm coats for another month here.
ReplyDeleteLearn something new every day! Day's eye. I love it. It certainly looks like Spring.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely image, Eleonora! I love margheritine, they are so tender and poetic!
ReplyDeleteVery interesting etimology, thank you!
PS. This photo would have been just perfect for tomorrow's theme day (the Tenin technique)!
I loved to pick these and make daisy chains as a kid in Pula, Croatia. Yes, it meant the spring was fully here.
