roma: epoche e stili

This image really encapsulates the essence of Rome. A wild juxtaposition of layers, eras, and styles.
In the foreground, the Renaissance classicism of Michelangelo's Campidoglio; behind it, the stark Romanesque/Gothic lines and ogives of the Basilica di Santa Maria in Ara Coeli; beyond that, the neoclassic 20th century Monument to Victor Emanuel, inaugurated in 1911, completed in the 30's and added with a panoramic elevator in 2007.

  1. Very true!

It could also be called from the sublime (foreground) to the ridiculous (the 'typewriter' in background). Just sayin'….

  4. Fantastic picture!! Reminds me of R J B Bosworth's latest book Whispering City about the layers of history in Rome and how each modern historical epoch tried to use these histories to advantage.

  5. What's the Italian word for wild and crazy wonderful? You got me on my toes! As the photo loaded, I kept saying, "what the f...is that building?" Actually, I don't talk that way. Just confused per un momento. You must have a mischievous side.

How's Amanda Knox trial going? Is she being convicted in the press?
