maccarese

{windy day at the beach}

I had never seen so many kite-surfers all together in one place. The wind and big waves (big for central Italy, at least) delighted both the surfers and us watching.

In the first and last photo are two characteristic '70s Roman beach icons, a Tellinaro–man who harvests wedge shells (telline, or arselle) by dragging a tall and heavy strainer device with metal “teeth” through the sand of the shallows–and a Pattino, muscle-and-oar propelled leisure vessel; in many beach lidos like this one, it is employed as a lifeguard emergency vehicle.

  1. Lovely seaside pictures! Even windy days are good beach days, I think!

  3. Lovely and fun photos. I particularly like the middle photo; the kites seem to have just appeared on their own.

    I am curious as to where these photos were taken and what kind of temperatures you are experiencing in Rome these days. It has been unseasonably warm here in Pennsylvania.

  4. I think the kites used for surfing are so pretty, and they soar and dance like birds. What a great sport.

  5. Would you believe that I live on an island and have never seen kite surfers? I guess the trend hasn't caught on here yet.

  6. All the kites are so wonderful to look at! Thanks for the interesting information about the tellinaro and pattino too — never heard of either before.

  7. What a fabulous spectacle. I have only ever seen one or two individuals doing this, here on the Lago di Bolsena in the autumn months.

  8. Tracy~ Every beach day is a great day!
    Saretta~ Cs over the seas... ha ha ha!
    Ann P.~ This was taken in Maccarese, just south of the Rome Fiumicino Airport. It's very hot and humid these days, in the mid 80°s. Merciless sun and oven-like breezes.
    Jeff~ They are very graceful. But did you ever see one up close? They're HUGE!
    Loree~ It just caught on here about 5 years ago.
    Hilda~ Glad you enjoyed them!
    LindyLM~ I guess it's less windy inland. When are we going to meet??
