This photo's more about the incredible sky we were blessed with a few days ago, than the actual "palazzetto" in silhouette.
Built in 1957 and finished in time for the 17th Olympic Games of 1960, this curious steel and concrete "spaceship" arena was used for several sports, mostly basketball.

The Palazzetto dello Sport was designed by engineer Pier Luigi Nervi, who is also responsible for the Sala Nervi in the Vatican.

Ever wonder why seagulls fly over the Rome monuments? I understand why at night they feverishly circle the lit Piazza Venezia "wedding cake" or the Campidoglio, snacking on insects attraced by the powerful kilowatt lights. But even during the day they soar peacefully over the major monuments and sites. This is the hill behind the Vatican, beyond the ancient walls, at sunset.

One of the great benefits of occasionally working in the film industry is waiting around for sunset in order to capture a perfect "beauty shot."

The bells pealed evening vespers, swallows dove overhead in the sweet breeze as St Peter's dome suddenly lit up.

It was nearing dusk as I walked briskly to my car parked on the Lungotevere. The sun was lazily flirting with the horizon. Gulls were still sweeping above the monuments. The wind was playing with the bare sycamore branches, only one last leaf withstanding. It was not dark yet. And then the streetlamps flickered on.

This is just one of the breathtaking mid afternoon skies we were blessed with during a recent visit in Östersund, the only city of the Jämtland County, in Sweden.

Ferry on Lake Storsjön, Östersund ~ county of Jämtland

Sweden was dreamy. The few hours of daylight provided astonishing skies and breathtaking sunsets. This image of the ferry gliding back and forth along the narrow liquid channel carved out of the solid frozen lake was taken a few days ago at 3 pm. I was standing in the middle of the "ice road" on a thick glacial surface, shuddering not from the -22°C (-7.6°F) outside temperature, but from the fear of hearing a creak beneath my frozen toes.

It was a wonderful experience and lots of fun, but it's good to be back home.
